Our second annual Mustang Day was truly a memorable success. Humane education was the focus as we explored the theme of people and animals helping each other. We were joined by many remarkable groups and speakers.Terry, from the League for Animal Protection, and her agility dogs, all rescues, showed off their high energy skills and training.
Service dogs and handlers demonstrated the important role these canines play in helping their human companions maintain their independence. Our pet therapy teams shared stories of improved quality of life when animals visit hospitals, schools and nursing homes.
Various rescue groups brought wonderful, adoptable dogs so worthy of finding loving families. They also educated our audience about the plight of so many shelter dogs, especially pit bulls who remain homeless because they are so misunderstood.
Horses were an important part of the day, starting with our magnificent mustangs, Callie and Valor. Linda and Kellei explained the realities of the government round-ups and the cruel capture of these beautiful wild animals.
Major, a kind and gentle park police horse from Staten Island stood quietly while everyone petted him and hugged him throughout the day. Major was accompanied by police officers from the New York State Park Police Mounted Unit as well as park rangers who answered questions from the audience and described Major’s role in law enforcement. This was his last day of work as he is now twenty- two years old. He will become part of the Foundation’s Equine Care Program.
Animal Planet star, Annemarie Lucas discussed her work in humane law enforcement and animal rescue. She spoke passionately about the Premarin industry and her rescue of Sage, the Foundation’s Premarin mare. She also described the horrific conditions dogs in puppy mills endure. Her message was clear: adopt your companion animal. Do not patronize pet stores selling dogs and cats.Kids and grown-ups alike were enthralled by the animals at Bella’s barn. Everyone laughed, learned and even sang along with the puppets. Diana and Eric Mattern created this original and entertaining production.
Face painting Sachem high school volunteers and glitter tattoos by Kate and Jane delighted all.
