Save a Homeless Dog’s Life

Eight dogs were scheduled to be euthanized at the Town of Huntington municipal shelter. All were temperament tested and are regularly handled by LAP (League for Animal Protection) volunteers. UNADOPTED does not mean UNADOPTABLE! There are still open kennels for intake at the shelter. The dogs have been granted a “stay of execution” by the Town Supervisor in response to intervention from the League for Animal Protection. Finding forever homes for these dogs is a matter of life and death.

All of these dogs are spayed/ neutered and have their rabies vaccination. If you are interested in learning more about these dogs please contact the League for Animal Protection of Huntington :

OZZIE (Ozman)

Adopt a Pet :: Ozzie - Huntington, NY - American Pit Bull TerrierDear Oz has our heart, he just doesn’t have a home! Do you have the courage to grant his one wish? My name is Ozzie and I’m a handsome 3-year-old red-nose Pit Bull Terrier mix. I am a super-social boy waiting for a kind person to take one look at my comical face and fall in love with my hopeful eyes. I yearn to prance about and release my energetic spirit. I’m such a people person and I long for the companionship I crave so much. Since I am a rugged fellow, I’d prefer to live without children. I can’t help but get mouthy and jumpy when I start playing so I need a firm, confident, consistent handler. A trainer has been working with me and says I have made excellent progress! When I calm down, I sit like a gentleman to take treats nicely from your fingertips. I am a great pal to exercise with since I am an excellent walker on lead. I’ve heard that somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream, really do come true. But I’m still here, wishing…dreaming…. Won’t you please make my dreams come true?

• Ozzie has been with us the longest • Likes other dogs, but he’d do best with one of equal strength due to play style • Walks beautifully on lead • Mouthiness requires no children • No cats • Experienced owner required • Our trainer believes in Ozzie so much, he has offered free training to local adoptees
LYDIA

Adopt a Pet :: Lydia - Huntington, NY - American Pit Bull TerrierLydia has been at the shelter for over a year now and not many people have given her a first look much less a second thought. This poor girl has three strikes against her, none of which are her fault. First, she’s black. Black dogs have the lowest adoption rates just because of their coloring. Second, she’s a pit and too many people are scared away by the label before even meeting her. Finally, her previous owners decided those two characteristics weren’t scary enough, so they had to crop her ears. In spite of her tough-looking exterior, this young lady is really a big marshmallow on the inside. Lydia’s only fault is that she thinks she’s a lap dog, and she likes nothing more than being as close to people as possible, so much so that she doesn’t like to share with other furry critters. She is eager to please and thrives on affection and praise. She’s active, playful and obedient. The eyes are the gateway into the soul, and one look in her big brown eyes and you will see all the love Lydia has to give. Call LAP to look into Lydia’s eyes to see if she’s the dog for you.

• Lydia makes a commotion in her kennel when other dogs pass • Physically, she is stunning, just beautiful! • Very smart and affectionate • Walks beautifully on lead • Children 10+ • No other pets

JAGGER/JAEGGER (Jaggie)

Don’t let the grey muzzle fool you. This handsome fellow has plenty of pep in his step. Jagger is a spry 10-year-old retriever mix that is always raring to go for a walk, but would prefer to go for a trot. His pictures portray him as a reserved, distinguished fellow, but they belie his friendly, sweet nature. Besides walks, Jagger also appreciates being brushed, and other than when his sensitive feet are touched, is very gentlemanly about it. Adopting an older chap like Jagger has it’s advantages: he is housebroken, walks beautifully on lead and knows his basic commands. Since he has the propensity to pack on the pounds, Jagger is seeking a home with someone who will provide a light diet and daily exercise. His hips are in good shape and he’d like to keep them that way! Jagger likes other dogs but boisterous, young children are not his cup of tea, so he’d do best in a home without them. If you have a hole in your heart that needs filling, he may be your man! Call to set up an appointment to meet Jagger in person.

• Jagger is a senior returnee • Likes dogs and cats • Walks beautifully on lead • Nice boy, mellow

• Not especially affectionate • Is rated Easy, but due to age, no children or respectful teens only.
SIDNEY

Adopt a Pet :: Sidney - Huntington, NY - American Pit Bull TerrierWe can’t believe this friendly fella is still here. Sidney has it all: Good Looks, Great Personality & Intelligence. He greets everyone he meets with a chipper smile and happy tail. He knows his commands for sit, give paw (both) and is ready to learn more. He is strong and active but mellows out fast. After a good game of fetch with his squeaky penguin, he will flatten out his whole body into an “frog” position. It’s at that time when he loves to be pet or brushed and he just may roll over to show you his adorable freckle-belly. Sidney is a good a boy who needs a parent to encourage him to be the best doggie he can be. Come meet this little Rascal and fall in love!

Hey, how ya doin’? I’d be peachy keen if I had a loving family to devote myself to. I am Sidney, a vivacious 3-year-old pittie. I am a magnetic little rascal who likes to live life to the fullest. Not only am I an absolute doll but I’ve also got lots’-o-love to dish out. With all my yummy kisses and soft cuddles, you’ll wonder how you ever could have lived without me! Since I am still a youngster, I would like to have a patient guardian with the time to continue my obedience training. Thankfully, I am a smarty-pants who responds well to correction, which makes me a quick learner! Once I expend my puppyish exuberance, running for the ball and playing with my toys, I calm down like a good little lad and dutifully sit, accepting treats sweetly. Although I am an outgoing pup, I can be hand-shy at times so I’d prefer to live with older children please. Say you’ll have me! I promise, you won’t be sorry!

• Sidney has been with us over a year • Has matured beautifully • Loves the pool • Loves fetch and drops ball at your feet • Walks nicely on lead • Like dogs • No cats! • Children 12+
BRYANT

Pit Bull Terrier PictureHi folks! Allow me tell you a little about myself. My name is Bryant and I’m about 4 years old. I hate to brag, but I am one handsome fella. I have a gorgeous brindle coat and the sweetest brown eyes. So one day, I was wandering around the neighborhood when a man in a van picked me up and brought me to the shelter. Although the people here are nice, a hard concrete floor is not my idea of an ideal place to rest my head. I’d love to kick back on my own dog bed while watching TV…well, you could watch the TV, I’ll just keep your feet warm. I am affectionate and like being close to people, however, I have no one to cuddle up with here. It’s awfully lonely. Since I have a lot of energy and have not had much work in the obedience department, an experienced dog owner would be the best fit. You should be willing to spend time developing my manners and work on my leash skills. Since I am very strong, I’d do best in a home without small children, as I wouldn’t want to knock them down. The best thing about me, is that I am super smart and eager to learn so that should make obedience F-U-N! I have been waiting for someone to see me for the diamond I am. If you think I could complement your household, call a LAP volunteer to come down to meet me.

http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/15601860

• Bryant has horrible cage behavior since Day One • Has made the fastest, most progress in obedience • Knows SIT, WAIT, LEAVE-IT • Affectionate and happy • Walks well on lead • I think he likes dogs but will double-check • No cats • Children 12+
HOPE (Hopey-girl)

German Shepherd Dog PictureHope is an attractive GSD/Collie/Husky mix who was turned-in to the shelter when her owner died. She is 6-years-old and boasts beautiful coloring and a medium-length coat that requires regular brushing. When she first came to us, Hope was confused, depressed and obviously pining for her owner. It took some time for her to adjust to her new situation and, like most German Shepherds, exhibits poorly in her kennel. Her display frightens most people that stop to look at her, and consequently, they do not inquire further. When someone takes the time to get to know Hope, they discover that she walks very nicely on lead and is gentle when taking treats. She knows Leave-it, Sit, Paw and Kisses. She absolutely LOVES the pool and rolling on her back in the grass. She also appreciates getting brushed and her butt scratched. She doesn’t have much interest in toys but that may change with time. Because Hope is not fond of other dogs, she’d do best as the only pet in the household. We recommend an experienced leader and a household with older children.

http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/15601361

• Like most GSDs, Hope displays poorly in her kennel • Owner died • Needs slow introductions • Loves the pool • Playful, affectionate, smart • No dogs • No cats • Respectful, older children • Experienced handler
TESSA

Pit Bull Terrier PictureTess is way too smart to be locked away in a shelter while her future forever family is losing precious time with her. Could you be her forever family? Pretty, petite Tessa would be perfect for the first-time dog owner as she would benefit from going to obedience school with her new family. She already knows sit and down, and she’s eager to learn more. As a matter of fact, Tessa would be a good candidate for agility lessons. A fenced-in yard would be perfect for Tessa to practice chasing tennis balls, frisbees and enjoying down time rolling in the grass. If you prefer long walks, jogging or hiking, then Tessa’s your girl! She would love those hobbies as well–she’d be your little, brown shadow. Set up a meeting with Tessa by calling L.A.P. and see if she’s the dog you didn’t know you were missing.

http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/15703522

• Tessa bounds off the walls in her kennel when dogs pass • Young, active, smart and playful • Likes other dogs when properly introduced • No cats • Children 10+
FLORA

Pit Bull Terrier PictureThis attractive young lady has only been with us a short time. She is a 1.5 year old, vivacious, energetic girl who loves to romp around with toys and go for walks. She does know SIT, but is in need of obedience training. She’s smart and eager to please, so she will make a good student. Given that Flora lacks tolerance for young children, we’d like her placed in an adult-only home. She likes other dogs, so if you’re thinking of adding to your ‘pack’, give LAP at call and set up a doggie meet & greet!

http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/16783939

• Flora was initially thought to dislike men. She has since socialized with male staff and volunteers and shown no issue • Lots of energy and needs obedience • Loves to play ball • Likes the pool • Is young and trainable • Likes dogs • No cats • No children

I have news to share: Jagger and Hope have both found wonderful homes. Sidney and Tessa are very well loved. Unfortunately, Lydia, through no fault of her own, is back in our care. Bryant, Flora, and Ozzie are still available for adoption. Please continue to share these dogs’ plight with your contacts. Thank you.
