The Kaeli Kramer Foundation’s newest rescue is a PMU mare. PMU mares are used to produce the drug Premarin. A pregnant mare’s urine (hence the name Premarin) is obtained by keeping the mares constantly pregnant. The mares are denied free access to water to make their urine more concentrated They are tied in straight stalls unable to turn or lie down. The foals born of this horrific practice are considered superfluous products by the pharmaceutical industry and are discarded, the majority winding up in slaughterhouses. Premarin, which is prescribed for treatment of the symptoms of menopause, as well as other conditions, has been implicated as the cause of several types of reproductive cancers, heart attacks, and blood clots. Wyeth Pharmaceuticals is now marketing a new drug, Aprela, also made from pregnant mares’ urine.
Our new rescue has been named Sage. She was brought to New York from North Dakota by Anne Marie Lucas, the star of Animal Planet’s Award winning show “Animal Precinct.” Ms. Lucas is an outspoken defender of animals, and is the frequently viewed face and voice of humane law enforcement. Ms. Lucas rescued Sage’s son, Shelby about two years ago and vowed to find his mother. When she finally located her, Ms. Lucas contacted colleague and Foundation Board Member Dr. Pam Corey, who agreed that Kaeli’s Foundation would provide a safe home for Sage and her soon-to-be born foal.
Although she is twelve years old, Sage does not know how to walk on a lead. She had never eaten grain from a bucket nor had she ever known the delight of eating an apple or carrot. Despite her hard life, she has a kind eye and a gentle temperament. She is expecting her foal in mid-May. Unlike most PMU foals, this one will have a safe and loving home. We know that Kaeli is sending her light to Sage and her new foal-to-be.
This is amazing!
Sage and her son are so cute!
