Everyone was affected by Hurricane Sandy. So many have lost so much. When we heard about the Pet Emergency Shelter, which was established in Mitchell Field by the North Shore Animal League, we knew that we needed to help. Our Humane Education and Life Skills participants volunteered to help the animals. There are many animals at the shelter, the majority of which are cats and dogs, There are also turtles, birds, bunnies and fish. When we arrived we were given many assignments. We set up litter boxes, filled cat food bowls, emptied garbage, swept floors, disinfected cages and carriers and restocked various supplies. All of the animals at the shelter are pets with owners displaced by the storm or still without power. Many of the animals are confused and do not understand what is happening and why they are in a strange place without their families. The staff and the volunteers are doing an amazing job of trying to keep all of the animals in their care calm, safe and as happy as possible. We were so grateful to have the opportunity to help our community during this difficult time. It was so important to all of us to make a difference .
